The LIFE TECMINE project, promoted by the Forest Management Service of the Regional Ministry of Environment, Infrastructures and Territory, has been present in two of the most relevant scientific and technical congresses on environmental restoration: the III SIBECOL Congress & XVII Congress of the Spanish Association of Terrestrial Ecology (AEET) and the IX Spanish Forestry Congress, with the presentation of two technical posters that include the main results and lessons learned from the project.
III Congress SIBECOL-AEET 2025
The congress was held in Pontevedra from 2 to 6 June 2025. This third joint edition, organised by the Iberian Ecology Association (SIBECOL) and the AEET, brought together professionals in the field of ecology, including researchers, technicians and managers of the natural environment. Among the participating entities were numerous national and international research centres, universities, environmental NGOs and public administrations.

On this occasion, the Centre for Environmental Studies of the Mediterranean (CEAM), partner of the LIFE TECMINE project, presented the poster entitled "Beyond LIFE TECMINE Project: Innovative techniques for mine restoration in Mediterranean environments. Results, impact and lessons learned". The poster presented the progress of the project in kaolin mine restoration in Mediterranean conditions, with emphasis on the good practices applied, the effectiveness of low-cost techniques such as micro-watersheds, and the ecological impact observed in the medium term, including increases in plant survival, cover, spontaneous biodiversity and carbon storage.
Spanish Forestry Congress: a meeting point for sustainable forest management
The second congress took place in Gijón from 16 to 20 June 2025. The 9th Spanish Forestry Congress is the main scientific and technical forum of the forestry sector in Spain, organised by the Spanish Society of Forestry Sciences (SECF) and held every four years. This year's edition brought together more than 1,000 participants from different disciplines related to forestry, restoration and land planning.
The poster ‘LIFE TECMINE: Innovative techniques for the restoration of mines in the Mediterranean region’, prepared by the multidisciplinary project team, was presented at this forum. The content addresses the restoration approach based on ecosystem functionality, which integrates restorative geomorphology (GeoFluv™), soil reconstruction with organic amendments and the establishment of native vegetation, resulting in a significant reduction of erosion, increased water retention and progressive recovery of the ecosystem.
With its participation in these two reference congresses, the LIFE TECMINE project consolidates its role as a demonstrative model of ecological restoration of mining operations in the Mediterranean area, reinforcing the exchange of technical and scientific knowledge and favouring the replicability of its methodologies in other territories affected by extractive activities.
