Participation of the LIFE TECMINE project at COP16

The coordinator of the LIFE TECMINE project, Juan Uriol Batuecas, represented the mine restoration project at the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Under the theme ‘Our Land, Our Future’, this international meeting brought together scientists and experts from all over the world committed to combating desertification and land degradation.

The UNCCD COP16, which took place from 2 to 13 December 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, brought together more than 3,000 participants from 196 countries to agree on measures to combat drought and accelerate action to restore degraded land. This year's theme ‘Our Land, Our Future’ highlights the importance of sustainable land management as a basis for resilient and sustainable socio-economic development. In this context, the Pavilion dedicated to Restoration, and driven by the Global Soil Initiative (G20 GLI), became a focal point for sharing experiences and innovative approaches.

The participation of LIFE TECMINE, a project promoted by the Forest Development and Management Service of the Regional Ministry of the Environment, Infrastructure and Territory, took place on 10/12/2024 in the session ‘Soil, agriculture, mine restoration and community’ in the Pavilion dedicated to Restoration.

Juan Uriol, presented the innovative techniques used in the project, as well as the results and achievements. The presentation, entitled ‘LIFE TECMINE: innovative techniques for mine restoration’, attracted the attention of international experts interested in replicating the successes achieved in Spain. During the presentation, Juan Uriol highlighted the main challenges faced in the restoration of mining areas and how the innovative techniques applied by the project have allowed the transformation of degraded landscapes into functional ecosystems.
