The LIFE TECMINE project, promoted by the Forest Development and Management Service of the Regional Ministry of Environment, Infrastructure and Territory, has been invited to participate in the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) to be held in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) from 2 to 13 December 2024 under the theme ‘Our land, our future’.
Juan Uriol Batuecas, as coordinator of LIFE TECMINE, will participate in the session on 10 December at 12:31 pm (Spanish time) in the Restoration Pavilion. It can be followed live online after registering on the website:

For the first time, the COP features a dedicated Restoration Pavilion, where more than 140 speakers will communicate cutting-edge technical advances that are driving restoration forward. The Pavilion is promoted by the Global Land Initiative (G20 GLI) established by the G20 countries in 2020, which aims to scale up soil restoration globally across all terrestrial ecosystems to achieve a 50% reduction in degraded land by 2040.
The LIFE TECMINE project was already selected by the European Union at the COP15 International Conference in Montreal in December 2022, as an example of biodiversity restoration. On this occasion, part of the team will travel to Saudi Arabia to participate in the session on 10 December and explain the innovative mining restoration techniques used to create stable and erosion-resistant formations and improve biodiversity in the Fortuna Mine (Ademuz).
COP16, which began on 2 December, is set to mark a turning point and a renewed global commitment to accelerate investment and action to restore the land. Over the years, it has established itself as the only event of its kind in Europe. This edition will be the largest UN land conference to date.
